Our Symbol Our Symbol Our Symbol

The symbol of the butterfly has long been associated with Psychiatry, as the meaning of the ancient Greek letter psi (from which the term “psychiatry” is derived), means both butterfly and soul. It is also thought that the metamorphosis of the butterfly is symbolic of the healing journey that occurs with the implementation of psychiatric treatment.

Our symbol incorporates the Western Jewel butterfly, a native to Western Australia, and the traditional psi symbol of Psychiatry. Western Psychiatry has adopted this symbol, as it encapsulates the science of the field of Psychiatry, our hope for the healing transformation of our patients, and the strong Western Australian identity of our Practice.
